3 units; 3 hours Lecture Recommended Preparation: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 100. Examines the major social, cultural, economic, and political forces which affect the lives of diverse groups women in the Third World. Introduces central social scientific concepts in women's studies and explores feminist perspectives on a range of social issues affecting women in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East, including globalization, violence, education, work, and family. Surveys and integrates anthropological, cultural studies, historical, legal, and sociological perspectives on gender and its relationship to race, sexuality, class, age and other aspects of social experience in developing nations.
