This course is designed to introduce the basic principles of microbiology to nursing and allied health students. Topics include biological concepts of cell structure, growth, reproduction, genetics, classification, beneficial microbe/human interactions, infections and host defenses. Laboratory exercises are designed to teach microscopy, staining, cultivation and identification of bacteria, control of microbial growth, aseptic technique and proper disposal of contaminated items.
