In this course dealing with spoken English for healthcare in general, and nursing in particular, students will be introduced to the main principles of therapeutic communication. They will focus on and be able to carry out operations in the important areas such as techniques used to elicit information from patients in a non-judgmental environment, explaining, giving instructions, asking for clarification, and the dejargonization of medical terminology and acronyms. Emphasis will be placed on developing clear speech through pronunciation practice activities, both in class and in the computer labs. This course will also focus on introducing students to cultural issues that relate to spoken interaction in an American nursing context.
