Class hours: 48-54 lecture. Transfer Credit: CSU. Overview of the history and philosophical foundations of probation and parole in the United States. Organization and operations of probation and parole agencies as particular segments of the criminal justice system. Probation as part of the judicial process, and parole as part of the corrections system. Theoretical concerns exemplified in probation and parole supervision, as well as the practical aspects of probation and parole services. Review and evaluation of community-based corrections and the programs included in response to criminal behavior. Issues and problems relating to the pre-sentence report, determinate versus indeterminate sentencing, the variety of roles of the probation and parole office, and the legal decisions affecting probation and parole practice.
