Information about the various materials, their relationship to personal imagery and style, in both traditional and contemporary painting and drawing is emphasized. Study in the composition of pigments, paints, oil mediums, inks, dyes, pastel, crayon, fresco and other artists' materials (egg tempera, silver point, encaustic) are fundamental to the course. Included are the use of tools and materials in constructing painting supports and carriers, and techniques of matting and framing art work.
