The African-American Experience. 3(3,0). This course will survey the experience of African Americans in the United States. It will focus on specific historical periods that significantly impacted black life and were important in shaping the social, economic, political, ideological, and cultural landscape of American society. Major topics covered will include the following: the African background; the Atlantic slave trade; Slavery; the Civil War; Reconstruction; Jim Crow and segregation; blacks and the welfare state; and black political activism. The course not only delineates the experience of African Americans as they confronted hostile institutions and social forces in America, but it also juxtaposed those experiences with the ideas and themes articulated in African American social and political thought.
