Rival theories of self in Machiavelli, Luther, Montaigne, Hobbes, Pascal, and Spinoza are explored alongside the richly embodied "persons" pictured in painting (Titian, Rembrandt, Velázquez), conduct literature (Castiglione, La Rochefoucauld), drama (Milton, Molière, Calderón), psychological fiction (La Fayette), and satiric prose (La Bruyére).
