How the historical fiction that has flourished over the past four decades challenges the notions of objectivity and totalization, while providing alternative viewpoints for the reconstruction and reinterpretation of the past. Novels by Grass, Doctorow, Delillo, García-Márquez, Allende, Cristina García and Lídia Jorge. Theoretical texts by White, LaCapra, Benjamin, Ricoeur, and Chartier. Films to be discussed include The Official Story andEuropa, Europa. Prerequisite: two previous literature courses. Instructor's permission required.
