This course is an historical and topical examination of the development of black popular cultures. We will explore the debates about popular culture and specifically examine the ways that race (as well as gender, sexuality and class) shape these debates. In addition we will explore specific black popular cultural practices (music, dance, film, radio, theater, etc.) as well as the larger contexts for their production and reception.
