This course examines U.S. social movements from 1954 through 1974, concentrating on the 1960s. Drawing on primary and secondary sources, we examine such topics as the Civil Rights Movement and the emergence of Black Nationalism, the antiwar movement, the relationship between the New Left and second-wave feminism, and the movement for gay liberation. The course also pays attention to how the 'sixties' are represented in contemporary culture.
