Particular attention given to representations of gender, race, and ethnicity with comparisons to the evolution of European film. The Birth of a Nation (1915) by D.W. Griffith, a white Southerner, will be a key text in dialogue with African-American director Oscar Michaeux's Within Our Gates (1920).
