The relationship between Milton's Paradise Lost and various strands of early culture; Renaissance painting, garden design, and performance art; the satanic and social conflict, 17th century conceptions of human labor, sensuality and freedom; early explorers' depictions of native peoples, the debates about marriage and divorce, new ideas about the "inner light" (spiritual presence dwelling in the human) and how it is codified. Open to a maximum of 15 juniors and seniors. Signature of instructor required. Offered in alternate years. Signature of instructor required for registration.
