A systematic survey of structure, nomenclature, and reactions of common functional groups and carbon compounds. Topics include stereochemistry, chirality, stereoisomerism, nucleophilic substitution and elimination, insertions, radical processes, oxidation-reduction and acid-base equilibria. Includes spectroscopic analysis. Discusses applications to systems of biological significance. Meets: Three hours class, three hours laboratory. Prerequisite: CHEM 7 or permission of instructor.
