Description:

Nearly four centuries have passed since the first enslaved Africans arrived in what is today the United States. More than 140 years have passed since American slavery was abolished. Yet slavery remains a palpable presence in the United States. In this interdisciplinary course, we will examine slavery as a problem in American history, culture, and memory, exploring the institution and its legacies in such arenas as history, literature, cinema, visual arts, and heritage tourism.
