Topics include the relation between the Ancients and the Moderns, evaluations of the possibilities and limitations of differing media, the role of language in discussions of the "other" arts, and conceptions of synaesthesia and correspondence. Texts selected from Perrault, Winckelmann, Lessing, Diderot, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Hoffman, Baudelaire, and others.
