A reading of three major Modernist authors, with a focus on the following issues: role of the artist, representation of consciousness, weight of the past. Texts include substantial portions of Proust's Recherche, Joyce's Portrait and Ulysses, Faulkner's Sound and the Fury, Light in August and Absalom, Absalom! Prior background in these authors desirable, especially Ulysses. Senior seminar. Reserved for: Seniors. Preference given to concentrators in Comparative Literature, English, Modern Culture and Media.
