This course focuses on Japanese and Korean women's literature from the modern period, giving particular attention to the historical issues and the narrative strategies that play out in celebrated works of women's fiction. The goal of the class is to deepen our understanding of the universal and particular aspects of women's writing in Japan and Korea and at the same time to learn an idiom with which to talk about literary form. Previous coursework in East Asian Studies or Literary Studies is suggested but not required.
