Introductory course in black and white photography, emphasizing core photographic concepts, possibilities, history, genres, technical information, and techniques. A variety of lens-less and lens based exercises will be introduced blurring the boundaries between the “traditional” sense of photography (as means of mechanical reproduction) and other studio based media such as drawing or painting. Large and medium format cameras will be introduced, but students should have their own 35 mm film camera. Pre-requisite: VISA 0100 or 0110. This course restricted to 15 VISA or Art Semiotic Concentrators, and others by permission of the instructor. 10 seats will be available during pre-registration. Students who are not admitted during pre-registration or were unable to pre-register should attend the first meeting.
