This course is an opportunity for students to further their understanding of East Asian Buddhist attitudes and values by investigating characteristic themes in literature as a whole, rather than by studying formal scriptures and doctrinal tracts. Participants will explore tensions between the religious and poetic impulses and learn to recognize Buddhist symbols in Chinese and Japanese poetry, fiction and plays.
