Examination of photography's role in shaping ideas about race, class, gender, sexuality and national identity in America. Critical analysis of images from a wide range of genres including: commercial photography, portraiture, social documentary, photojournalism, ethnographic and scientific photography, erotica, and fine-art photography are discussed within their historical and social context. Four hours lecture, two hours laboratory.
