Provides students with a foundation in basic medical microbiology with an emphasis placed upon identification and control of infectious diseases and their causative organisms. Topics include: classification of microorganisms, bacterial morphology, metabolism, and genetics; viral diseases; host-parasite relationships; epidemiology and control of microorganisms; and a survey of disease-causing bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. The hands-on laboratory experience supports and expands the classroom discussions with an emphasis on culture techniques, microscope use, and safety in the medical laboratory.
