Using case studies from traditional to contemporary art, this course explores the intersection of art with its public from traditional church, state and aristocratic patronage to the art market to public art. As a primary focus we will probe the social location of museums and also their function, exhibitions, educational role, and ideologies. Controversial matters such as the role of government, globalization and art and archaeolgocial theft will be engaged in terms of changing cultural values.
