This course is designed to increase understanding of early literacy development and the conditions which promote total literacy from birth through lower elementary grades. Language theory and current research are used to shape informed practices regarding literacy development. Connections are made among all aspects of literacy learning: reading, writing, listening, speaking and attitude development. The course explores and develops many related activities to foster a balanced, positive, constructive attitude towards literacy in young children. Course includes a minimum of 10 hours of observation/teaching reading in educational setting(s). 2 semester hours credit. [A]
