(3.0 Units) (No prerequisite. Three lecture hours weekly.) This course is a general survey of what anthropologists have learned about belief systems and folklore from a cross cultural perspective. It will ask: What do we know about the origins of belief systems? Why do people in most societies believe in unseen spirits and powers? How do people use supernatural or special powers to gain control over their own lives or the lives of others? What is the subdiscipline of folklore and how does it relate to the subject matter and to anthropology as a whole? The course will use examples drawn from a wide variety of cultural areas.
