(4.0 Units) (Prerequisite: Biology 110. Class includes field trips. Field trips may meet earlier and run later than scheduled to take advantage of low tides. Three lecture and three laboratory hours weekly.) This laboratory and field course is designed to give biology majors as well as nonmajors an overview of marine plant and animal communities. Topics investigated include fundamental physical oceanography, marine ecology, marine zoology, marine botany, and field studies. Emphasis is on the local marine communities comprising protected and unprotected rocky intertidal estuaries, salt marshes, sandflats, mudflats, and floating docks. Laboratory investigations include phytoplankton and zooplankton studies, fish identification and internal morphology, marine invertebrate identification, and marine algae preservation techniques.
