(1.5 Units) (No prerequisite. One lecture and two laboratory hours weekly.) This course will include skills in African-Haitian dance based upon the technique of Katherine Dunham. Emphasis will be placed upon the development of rhythmic awareness through barre and floor progressions. Movement phases will be based upon authentic dances from Africa and the Caribbean Islands. Participants will learn to use their body parts polyrhythmically and in isolation. The history and the culture of the people will also be studied. May be taken four times for credit.
