(3.0 Units) (No prerequisite. Three lecture hours weekly.) This course introduces students to the early literacy curriculum. It includes methods for setting up a classroom and planning curriculum to foster the development of pre-reading and prewriting skills. Strategies for working with children who speak languages other than English are also included. Approaches for involving families in supporting language and literacy development in children are covered. Students will also learn about methods for assessing children's skills in speaking, pre-reading, and pre-writing. The curriculum for this course is based on NAEYC's "Heads Up! Reading" Early Literacy Program and featurevideos and/or broadcasts from the NAEYC's "Heads Up! Reading?atellite course. (CSU)
