(3.0 Units) (Prerequisites: Chemistry 131 and Physics 207A. Two lecture and three laboratory hours weekly.) The internal structures and resulting behaviors of materials used in engineering applications, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites, are studied with emphasis on the effects of heat, stress, imperfections, and chemical environments. Laboratories provide direct observations of the structures and behaviors discussed in the course, experience with the operation of testing equipment, and the preparation of experimental reports.
