(3.0 Units) (Prerequisite: Eligibility for English 150. Three lecture hours weekly.) The representation of the character and role of women in Western culture from Greek tragedy through contemporary literature, with a particular emphasis on American literature, will be examined through the analysis of selected texts. Lectures and discussions will concentrate on such issues as the conception of the female character, elements of women's language, the development of female writers, and the relations between literary representation and social reality. The primary focus will be on women in American literature by both male and female authors, on the writing of minority women, and on the political and cultural context of literature.
