(3.0 Units) (No prerequisite. Three lecture hours weekly.) In this course students examine short stories and novellas as literary forms. Readings include representative works by mainstream and multicultural writers as well as classical masters. Lectures provide historical and cultural background helpful in appreciating the literature; class discussions focus on interpretation and on the analysis of traditional literary devices such as plot, character, point of view, and theme.
