(3.0 Units) (No prerequisite. Ethnic Studies 111 is not a prerequisite for Ethnic Studies 112. Three lecture hours weekly.) This course is a historical survey of the African/African American experience from developments on the African continent to the beginning of the twentieth century in American history. The course is designed to explore the role of African beginnings, the African Diaspora, and Black Nationalism in the growth of a distinctive African American culture in the United States. Course emphasis will include the early development of the African continent, Nile Valley cultures, the influences of trade and Islam, European-African interactions, Caribbean and South American developments, slavery in North America, the expansion, the Civil War, and the era of Reconstruction.
