(4.0 Units) (No prerequisite. Can be taken for credit as Humanities 109A or Communications 109A. Credit will be awarded for only one course. Four lecture hours weekly.) This course offers a chronological survey of narrative film as art, business, technology, and politics from the beginning of the movies in the 1890s to post World War II. Periods and movements covered will include the Silent Era, German Expressionism, Soviet Avant Garde and editing of the 1920s, French classicism, American Studio Period and sound, as well as the history of censorship in the United States.
