(3.0 Units) (No prerequisite. Three lecture hours weekly.) This course is an introduction to political science as a survey of American government. Students learn methods of political analysis and the application of these methods to the study of American government. It is an introduction to the principles and problems of government in the United States, emphasizing the national government but providing an understanding of government at the state and local level as well. Particular attention is paid to the dynamics, which make the principles meaningful, and the machinery move. Students will develop insights into the clash of ideas in American politics and how they can influence political outcomes. Political Science 101 is recommended over Political Science 100 for majors in prelegal, social sciences, liberal arts, and teaching. Can also be offered in a distance learning format.
