(3.0 Units) (No prerequisite. Three lecture hours weekly.) This is a course designed to familiarize students with the theory and process of effectively communicating with people different from themselves in terms of ethnicity, culture, race, and language use. The specific focus of this course will be to develop, through guided research, the student's ability to recognize, acknowledge, and better understand the uniqueness of people from European-American, African-American, Asian- American, and Latino-American cultures through comparison of their respective communication behaviors. Students will study theories from intercultural and intergroup communication as they relate to intercultural communication, and will read from an intercultural anthology. Through lectures, discussions, reading, research, viewing films on videotapes, group presentations, written and oral assignments, students will learn the skills necessary to achieve positive outcomes when communicating with others who are perceived as being culturally, ethnically or racially different than they.
