This course treats major trends in Japanese thought and culture of the Tokugawa period (1600-1868), including debates among Confucian scholars; merchant culture; samurai ethics; the popularization of Buddhism; and the rise of nativism in the late period. Emphasis is on reading and analysis of primary texts in translation. Required: a course in East Asian culture or religion. Recommended but not required: RELS 0120.
