(1 credit) This course is designed as an introduction to Botany, tree identifi cation, how different trees grow and respond to change, and how different trees regenerate themselves. Emphasis is placed on the identifying characteristics of commercially important North American trees and their regenerative characteristics and product utilization. The successful student will be able to identify regionally important species in the fi eld of leaves, twigs, bark, fruit, habitat characteristics, and by family and genus, explain species association, natural succession, and use a dichotomous key to aid in tree identifi cation. Emphasis during the lab portion of this class will be entirely on identifying regionally important species in the fi eld and the commercially important southeastern trees. Corequisite FOR 1122
