The course will examine the nature of artistic traditions, how cultures are revealed by their artworks, how artists work within cultural traditions, and how traditions continue and are changed by contact with other traditions. The artistic traditions of the following areas will be examined: Africa; India and Southeast Asia; China and Japan; Arabia; Oceania; pre-Columbia and First Peoples; Greece and Rome; medieval and Renaissance Europe; absolutist and revolutionary art of the West; and industrial and post-industrial culture.
