(4-3-4) Introduction to the chemistry of carbon compounds. Topics covered include bonding theory, acid/base theory, nucleophilic substitution and elimination, stereochemistry, spectroscopic methods (IR, NMR), electrophilic addition, epoxides, Grignard Reaction, hydroboration/oxidation, and free radical reactions. Nomenclature of hydrocarbons, alcohols, amines, ethers is included. The laboratory will include an introduction to organic methods of analysis and synthesis. Prerequisite: CHEM 1412.
