HU (Cross-listed in Comparative Literature and Latin American and Iberian Studies) R.Castillo Sandoval This course will examine the interaction among mass, elite, traditional, and indigenous art forms and their relationship with the dynamics of national/cultural identity in Latin America in the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the forms of expression to be studied are oral poetry and narrative, the "folletín" (19th-Century melodramas by installment) to 20th-Century "fotonovelas," "radionovelas," and "telenovelas," broadsides, comics, musical and political movements such as "neo-folklore," "New Song" and "Nueva Trova," artistic movements such as Mexican Muralism, popular dance, and the cinema. Prerequisite: A 200 level course or consent of instructor.
