This course will examine the creative process and the development of a national and individual subjectivity in Modern Hebrew Poetry. It will analyze poems written during the pre-State and State-of-Israel era and seek to discover the societal and individual realities reflected in Hebrew poetry and the various ways in which the writers reacted to those realities. All poems will be studied in translation, although knowledge of Hebrew is helpful. Selections include works by Bialik, Tchernichowsky, Greenberg, Alterman, Goldberg, Gilboa, Amichai, and Pagis.
