This course is an introduction to the great body of Jewish literature, beginning with the later parts of the Bible itself, which has been shaped by the centrality of biblical texts to Jewish religion and culture. The great medieval exegetes (Rashi, Rashbam, Ibn Ezra, and Ramban) will be emphasized and students will explore inner-biblical exegesis, the rabbinic approach to the Bible, the Bible in medieval philosophy and mysticism, and contemporary trends in Jewish exegesis.
