It can be argued that disturbances in the natural environment are reflections of the changing state of the human community. This course investigates the relationship between nature and community by raising questions such as: what is "the community," and how has it changed in modernity and postmodernity What are the contradictions in the American community and the environmental consequences Why is the concept of community so idealized Is "sustainable development" more an aspiration of community than a possibility in nature What are the historic and modern features of urban communities, and what is the urban basis for environmental problems and solutions To what extent can community and urban social processes be viewed in ecosystem terms Which forms of community best support the resolution of environmental problems The course draws from sociological theories of community and the city, case studies taken from the developed and developing worlds, and contacts with local community organizations.
