This course is a survey of modern Arabic literature in English translation from throughout the Middle East and North Africa but with a concentration on Egyptian literature. Students will read novels, short stories, theater, and poetry. Readings may include "The Thief and the Dogs" by Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz, the stories of Mohamed El-Bisatie, the plays of No'man Ashur, and off-beat Arabic poetry of the 1990s.
