Goal To enhance students' understanding of the historical and contemporary role of political parties and interest groups in the American political process. Content The course examines the historical development of the two-party system, the relationship between political parties and voting behavior, elections and campaign-finance law. The course will also trace the historical development and growing influence of interest groups, their relationships to political parties, Congress and the federal bureaucracy and will examine pluralist and elitist theories of interest groups and their significance for democracy.
