Goal To appreciate film as a visual record containing information relative to the appearance, lifestyles, and attitudes of different cultures; to understand the consequences that follow from identifying with or rejecting the discourses presented in a given film. Content Discussion and application of a variety of approaches to contemporary criticism, including but not limited to semiotic analysis, psychoanalytic criticism, Ideologiekritik, and critical feminism. Taught Alternate years. Prerequisites COM 103 and COM 215, or permission of instructor. Credit 3 hours.
