This course examines the transformation of Eastern European Jewish culture and society in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although Jews and Christians lived side by side for over 300 years, their lives were distinct. Jewish law, language, calendar, dress and dietary restrictions were different. This course will consider the broad political, social and economic landscape leading to the monumental changes in Jewish education, family life, and communal organization and politics.
