An examination of the origins of segregation and disfranchisement in the American South following Reconstruction through World War II. Attention will be paid to both the legal and extralegal edifices upholding white supremacy and the evolution of a racist consumer culture. The course will also explore African-American resistance to Jim Crow. Prerequisite: HIST 1301, HIST 1302, HIST 2301, HIST 2330, HIST 2331, or equivalent. (3-0) R
