Course examines the role of the director as "author" (auteur) of the filmand the several competing theories about what film authorship entails. This class also explores the works, stylistic expressions and filmic choices of major world directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Speilberg, Ousmane Sembene, Stanley Kubrick, Ingmar Bergman, and Francois Truffaut. An additional emphasis is placed on analyzing the changing role of the director from Hollywood's studio system heyday to today's independent filmmaking practices.
