(formerly ANTHR 106) A course on the archaeology of ancient civilizations. Students compare ancient civilizations of the New World and the Old World to investigate how complex societies differ, in structure and internal dynamics, from simpler societies. They address the issue of how and why complex societies arose in some areas and not in others, as well as why complex societies collapse.
