An introduction to the experience of World War II on the home front in East Asia. What happened in China and Japan during the war years? How were the Chinese and Japanese people mobilized for war, how did they survive the atrocities, and how did the widespread use of martial violence affect the development of East Asian societies, cultures, and politics? These are some of the questions that will be considered as we reconstruct the history of World War II in China and Japan through a variety of media including memoirs, films, scholarly works and contemporary literature.
